Feature Article:
Proud to Be a Relationship Coach

For most of my life when asked "What do you do?" I've struggled with my answer because I've always done more than one thing:

Childhood: paperboy, lawn and yard maintenance, odd jobs (anything for a buck!)

Adolescence: busboy, dishwasher, waiter, cook, restaurant manager

Adulthood: student, intern, counselor, therapist, consultant, clinical supervisor, program director

Past Ten Years: coach, mentor, trainer, author, speaker, entrepreneur, CEO

I've longed for a simple answer to the "What do you do?" question such as "teacher," "engineer," "plumber," and just this year solved this problem- after all these years I've decided that I'm proud to be (and call myself) simply a "Relationship Coach."

I still do a lot of things- write, speak, train, mentor, build businesses, etc, but the common theme is my mission and calling to make a difference in the world of relationships.

As CEO of Relationship Coaching Institute I'm a Relationship Coach.

As author of "Conscious Dating" I'm a Relationship Coach.

As a professional speaker I'm a Relationship Coach.

As a mentor helping professionals build successful practices I'm still a Relationship Coach!

You get the idea.

As a "Marriage and Family Therapist" I thought I was making a strong statement about my mission to help people with their relationships, however the (correct) perception of MFTs is that they work primarily with individuals and treat clinical disorders (depression, anxiety, etc). If you're an MFT and disagree, simply look at the survey data available from your professional association.

Relationships are clearly among the top values and goals of every living member of our society. Nobody is happy, successful, and fulfilled without functional relationships. Achieving financial, spiritual, educational, professional, even personal goals do NOT result in happiness and fulfillment without close, supportive, positive, functional relationships.

Would you agree? Or am I just biased? :-)

A Relationship Coach is the only professional solely dedicated to this hugely important area of life that impacts all of us in all ways in everything we do. A lot of professionals do some form of relationship coaching, such as a marriage educator, MFT, counselor, life coach, psychologist, minister, etc, however their roles are often narrow (e.g. addiction counseling, teaching relationship classes, etc) or broad, yet there is only ONE professional that ONLY specializes in this MOST important area of life.

We live in a highly specialized society. Professionals, retail stores, trades people (car mechanics, contractors, etc) have specialties and niches. It is common to do more than one thing, however prospective clients and customers typically seek a specialist that they perceive has the knowledge and expertise to address their unique needs.

So after all these years I've finally embraced my identity as a Relationship Coach and from now on, no matter where I am or who you are, if you ask me "What do you do?" my answer will be "I'm a Relationship Coach!"
