Couples Helping Couples

Both have significance for me as I have been a participant of a Couples Circle for the past two years and I'm on the Board of Directors of Imago Couples International.

I first wrote about the Couples Circle in the October 2004 issue of this newsletter. In addition to benefiting personally, as a Relationship Coach I see tremendous benefit for participation in a Couples Circle for any functional couple who desires a fulfilling, conscious relationship.

Couples can go to therapy, take workshops, and seek coaching, but then what? While our agenda might be to work with a couple forever, that is NOT their agenda! Most couples prefer to get support for their relationship for a period of time, then move forward in their life without professional help.

Given my strong belief that no-one is successful alone, I see the Couples Circle as the missing link between isolation and dependency upon professional help.

As a relationship coach I don't want my client dependent upon my support forever, and I'm invested in their continued future success. I believe recommending they join (or start) a couples circle for on-going support is a great next step for them.

And, as a therapist and relationship coach, while I don't desire to participate in on-going therapy or relationship coaching myself, I do desire a fulfilling relationship, and have found the Couples Circle to be a wonderful support resource for my own relationship.

In 2003 I was invited by Harville Hendrix to his ranch in New Mexico help form a new couples association. The criterion for being invited was (A) to have taken an Imago couples workshop, and (B) to NOT be an Imago therapist. To date I've taken three Imago workshops for couples, and while I'm not an Imago therapist I do consider myself to be "Imago-friendly." Maggie and I and twelve other couples spent the weekend brainstorming a peer support organization for couples.

Imago Couples International (ICI) is to my knowledge, the first and only peer support organization for couples. Organized by couples for couples. We achieved non-profit status last year, and the Board of Directors is all-volunteer. Interestingly, all Board positions are held jointly by a couple, such as our Co-Presidents Darrell Holdaway and Nevin Valentine who joined me in presenting last month's tele-seminar.

Though ICI was founded with the support of Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt and has "Imago" in it's name, no knowledge or experience with Imago is necessary for membership or participation. Couples utilize a simplified version of a couples dialogue in their Couples Circles, and this often motivates non-initiated couples to take an Imago workshop. While I'm sure this was Harville's desired outcome, ICI and the Couples Circles are run by couples for couples, and do not push Imago or any other workshop or professional service. Our emphasis is "Couples Helping Couples" and our mission statement is-

1. In a relationship? Start a Couples Circle! Use the links above for ideas and information to do so. You'll be glad you did.

2. Pass along this info to your clients and colleagues. Peer support for couples is an important and powerful key to on-going relationship success.

3. Support the early formation of Imago Couples International by joining as a Charter Member, and pass this along to other like-minded couples. More info here
