If you are familiar with Hedy and Yumi, you know how special they are and how powerful their work is. What you may not know is that they have radically revised their workshop far beyond their "Imago" roots. Listening to Hedy’s "Miracle of Connection" audio program will make that very clear. Welcome New RCI Coaches! The following professionals recently joined our ranks: Susan Gross, LCSW, Danbury, CT Relationship Coaching- So What?by David Steele As I prepare to go on the road to teach Relationship Coaching across the U.S., thousands of direct mail brochures are being sent to licensed mental health professionals in the areas I will be conducting my new one-day relationship coaching trainings. I’m imagining these folks receiving my mailing and asking, "Relationship Coaching. So what?" Fair question. Am I just providing my own spin on relationships and calling it "coaching?" Am I just trying to cash in on the latest personal growth fad? Is there anything really new here? In anticipation of these kinds of questions, I offer the following brief distinctions of available relationship support options (definitions are in my own words, based upon commonly understood perceptions of the public): COACHING: Assumes the client is functional and the Expert on their life. The coach empowers the client to identify and achieve their goals as a partner and cheerleader. THERAPY: Assumes the client needs healing and insight. The therapist is an expert who diagnoses and treats mental, emotional, and relational problems. (As a therapist myself, I know this is a narrow definition, which is mostly based upon the perception of the public) COUNSELING: Getting advice from a trusted advisor, such As a minister, layperson, or Master’s level professional trained/certified in a specialty, such as addictions, relationships, etc. CONSULTING: Getting specific advice from an expert, such as a lawyer, physician, or other professional deemed qualified to give such advice. EDUCATION: Taking classes and workshops to obtain information and tools for increased functioning. For relationships this includes such programs as PREP, PAIRS, PREPARE, etc. See http://www.smartmarriages.com for more information. So here’s the deal- In my experience, to be successful, our clients need:
Of the above options, Coaching, and perhaps Education, have empowering effects, while Therapy, Counseling, and Consulting tend to be focused upon giving advice. Our services do not work if the client doesn’t take responsibility, and they are much less likely to take responsibility under the "doctor-patient" paradigm that presumes they need advice to be helped.
CONCLUSION: In my opinion, coaching is the only option that accomplishes all three of the above. A good coach knows how to inform the client without imposing judgment and giving advice. To empower and support as an equal, not as an expert who is needed because the client isn’t functional or competent enough. Now, I am fully aware that this may ruffle the feathers of my Colleagues who believe in what they do and feel misunderstood Or misrepresented here. All I can say is that this is my personal perspective from 30 years as a helping professional. My request is that you take what fits, and leave the rest. While I’m an evangelist for coaching, I do believe therapy, counseling, consulting, and education are needed too! We have a common goal, which is to help our clients and make the world a better place. My position is that if we are to be successful in our mission, we need to be honest about what really works and what doesn’t for our clients. I continue to proudly display my Marriage and Family Therapist License on my wall. I just help my clients have successful relationships from a different paradigm than I was taught in the 80’s. If my perspective makes sense to you, I invite you to join us at Relationship Coaching Institute and let’s take relationship support for our clients to the next level.
