I've always been fascinated by this challenging statement by motivational speaker Jim Rohn, and when I've shared it with others I'm often taken aback by their protests-
...and so on. Well. yes, "stuff" happens in life that is out of our control and we feel like we didn't deserve, but a whole lot of stuff that, at first glance, might seem random, actually is a result of our choices. Call it "Radical Personal Responsibility." See article I believe that the important principle here is that as adults, our life is largely self-determined, and we must take responsibility for our choices and outcomes. While I would not have agreed at the time, I take responsibility for being divorced twice. Being the child of divorce, and valuing Life Partnership as highly as I do, it is painful to acknowledge my responsibility in being divorced. I can't be happy or successful if I am a helpless victim of circumstance. If I am aware of how I caused my divorce, I can learn how to have a lasting relationship. Taking full responsibility for my outcomes, though challenging, frees me to be successful. Sure, random bad stuff happens to good people, however, "Getting what you deserve" means to me: -- Ignorance or unconsciousness is not an excuse. I am responsible for my choices and their outcomes -- Success and happiness are not entitlements. Life doesn't work the way I want, need, or expect -- You don't know what you don't know -- Therefore, I must take nothing for granted, and put effort into becoming more conscious and continuing to learn and grow I've had lots of wake-up calls to this point of view, however, it took me two divorces and crashing my sailboat into the rocks of Alcatraz (I always seem to learn the hard way!) to finally "get" that I needed to give up my ego-driven illusion of control and realize that I need to be a humble student of Life. "Life doesn't give you what you need; it gives you what you deserve," while controversial and challenging, has my vote to be the 11th "dirty secret of happiness."
