5. TRIBUTE TO LAURIE CAMERON

As you may know, Laurie Cameron officially steps down as RCI Director of Singles Programs on April 30th.

We will get together by conference call on Thursday May 6th at 3:30 EST as she passes the baton to Lynne Michelson; we will honor her contributions to the RCI community, and celebrate the next step in the career of this talented relationship coach.

Laurie's history with RCI begins at the beginning. She was a participant in the very first RESTS teleclass training given by David Steele, and shortly afterwards accepted his invitation to become Director of Singles Programs to be the primary trainer and mentor for coaching singles.

Laurie has personally conducted approx. 40 trainings and trained over 400 RCI coaches in the 4 years of her tenure, and has introduced singles coaching to thousands of helping professionals in our introductory trainings and at ICF conferences. She has definitely left her mark on singles coaching at RCI and we are eternally grateful for her passion, dedication, and contributions.

Laurie's passion for relationship coaching for singles has

evolved into Divorce Recovery Coaching, and is creating a Divorce Adjustment Coaching project. For more info visit

6. END TELEPHONE TAG WITH ONLINE SCHEDULING

Save time and increase your availability to your clients and prospects by allowing them to book their own appointments with an outstanding new online scheduling system.

Designed specifically for private practice professionals, your clients and prospects will appreciate the ability to schedule, cancel, and reschedule their appointments with you, securely and confidentially. They, and you, receive e-mail confirmations, and to prevent scheduling conflicts, you have complete control of your calendar and availability.

This application is so easy, all your client or prospect needs to do is enter a valid email address, select the desired date and time for the appointment. That's it! The appointment is set! No waiting on hold, no worry of phone tag, no waiting for proper business hours. Your clients and prospects are able to set appointments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at their convenience!

It only takes a few minutes to set up, and their 30-day free

trial doesn't require giving them any financial info.

I put the URL to my online schedule in my e-mail signature line, and e-mail it to folks that wish to meet with me in person or over the telephone. I’m so happy to eliminate the hassles of telephone tag! For an example of how you can use this on your website, check out a website I’m putting together for Maggie at http://www.maggieharrislcsw.com/

CONGRATS TO OUR NEWEST “CERTIFIED RELATIONSHIP COACH FOR SINGLES” JoAnn Marini, San Diego, CA

CONGRATS TO Marvin Cohen (San Jose, CA) who is conducting the very first RESTS program at Esalen, the revered birthplace of the new age movement in CA:

Esalen Institute Workshop: "Finding Love: Relationship Success for Singles", May 16 - 21, 2004. http://www.RCISV.org/EsalenWorkshop

CONGRATS TO Michelle Zelig Pourau (Victoria, Australia) who writes:

“I just got off the phone from one of the major newspapers in Melbourne Australia - the journalist had come across my details and CALLED ME. She has a weekly column in the paper and wanted to do a 400 word article about my relationship coaching.

I told her about some of my workshops and will send her some more details and we will keep in contact. I told her if she is ever stuck on what to write - to call me. She said she will!”

CONGRATS TO Laurie Cameron (Denver, CO) who writes:

“I'm quoted in a fun article today in the Rocky Mountain News. Mark Wolf, the Relationships columnist, calls me a few times a year to interview me for his articles. I started sending him press releases and announcements a few years ago, and we now have a solid working relationship.

He always knows I'll have something to say about any relationship topic (no surprise to those of you who know me ;-), and he trusts I'll return his calls immediately. He knows I'm willing to help in him out any way I can. He's interviewed me as often as three times in three months.

The moral of this story: get out there and create a relationship with someone in the media! Every little bit helps!” Here's the link for the article online.

---------------------------------------------------------

Our coaches are certainly committed, talented, and making things happen! It is my honor to be part of this community that is making such a difference in the lives and relationships of others.

Have a win you would like to share? Any graduates from your RCI coaching 'find the love of their life and the life that they love?' Please pass it on and we'll celebrate it!

Feature Article

How Can I Coach Singles/couples If I’m Single/Married?
By David Steele

  • "How can I coach singles if I’m still single?”
  • "How can I coach singles if I’ve been married for 20 years?”
  • "How can I coach couples if I’m single?”
  • "How can I coach people to have great relationships if I’ve never had one?”

A common fear of helping professionals getting started in relationship coaching is that they won’t be effective because of their relationship status and/or experiences.

If you couldn’t coach singles because you’re still single, and if you couldn’t coach singles because you’re married, who’s left to coach singles?

If you couldn’t coach couples because you’re single, or if you couldn’t coach couples because you’re still working on your own relationship, who’s left to coach couples?

While I strongly believe we need to walk our talk, WHO YOU ARE as a person and a professional is more important than what you have/don’t have or what you’ve done.

A good coach is walking the path same path as the client…

hopefully a little ahead, but even that isn’t required. The ability to help someone depends more upon your helping skills, your ability to relate and empathize, share knowledge and experiences, and is not dependent upon you being the “expert” and having “arrived.”

RCI coach Mike McCartney has this to say:

“Effective coaching, I'd propose, is not a function of personal mastery in the area(s) being coached.

Andre Agassis' tennis coach probably couldn't score a single point in a three set tennis match with his client, but he can spot when Andre is rolling his right wrist inappropriately on a crosscourt backhand.

Tiger wood's golf coach couldn't keep within 20 strokes of his client, but he can spot Tigers' hips moving forward too fast.

A coach is not an expert or consultant, but a skilled perceiver, guide, mentor, encourager, challenger, and behavior-modification facilitator.

I come to you for assistance in my life. I don't care how messed up yours is. If you can make mine better, I keep coming back.

"Are you a skilled coach?" is the question, not, "Am I a skilled relationship partner."

This is one area where you don't have to walk the talk, but you'd better be able to talk the talk such that lives are changed ...” ENDQUOTE

While the analogy of relationship coaching to sports coaching might not quite work, it is interesting to consider: Is it important who the coach is if they are effective in getting results for their clients? I’m not sure you can separate who the coach is from their effectiveness, but would agree that effectiveness is the ultimate test.

One of the most talented relationship coaches for couples that I know is Linda Marshall, RCI’s Director of Couples Programs, who is single and has this to say:

“I am divorced and have a passion for working with couples. I believe my passion is from my spiritual source and perhaps someday I will understand why I, as a single woman, have been given this passion. For now I accept it and do everything I can to be the best coach possible for the couples I am privileged to work with. And what I know is what I give my clients is light years ahead of what I received during the years my ex-husband and I sought marital therapy.” ENDQUOTE

I strongly agree with Linda about the role of passion and following a calling. I have specialized in working with couples through two marriages and two divorces, and my commitment and passion for relationships is what made a difference for the couples I worked with, led me to start Relationship Coaching Institute and brought my life partner Maggie into my life, for which I am blessed and grateful.

When new coaches ask me “How can I coach singles/couples if I’m single/married,” my response is “Your singles or couples need you to be on the path with them, they don’t need you to be perfect. Who you are as a person, your passion, commitment, and skills will make you an effective coach, and is more important than your relationship status.”
