THE CREATIVE DESTRUCTION OF RelationshipCoachingInstitute

I learned the term “Creative Destruction” from Coachville’s “Business Concepts for Coaches” e-Program, which, interestingly, begins the program with this as “Business Concept #01,” defined as:

”… to deliberately destroy and replace perfectly good revenue streams with income from new or newly reinvented products/services. Instead of just waiting for competition or other market forces, this forces innovation from the very top, thus acting as a catalyst for research and experimentation. This automatically challenges the organization to continually drive the marketplace instead of reacting to it.”

After 5 years, it became time for the creative destruction of “RelationshipCoachingInstitute.com” to launch “ConsciousDating.org” and “PartnersInLife.org.”

The impetus for this decision began when we could not successfully re-negotiate our agreement with the trademark owner we were licensing our name from, which is a very long story! In the end, we decided it was much better for us and our licensees to use a name in which we own the trademark (yes… “Conscious Dating” is a federally registered U.S. trademark owned by us).

While the need to change the licensing agreement was the impetus, there are other good reasons to transition from “RelationshipCoachingInstitute” to “Conscious Dating” and “Partners In Life:”

  1. We own the trademarks
  2. “RelationshipCoachingInstitute” never quite worked as a name for relationship coaching for singles AND couples
  3. More effective branding as “Conscious Dating” is the name of my book for singles
  4. Both names make a more effective statement about what we stand for and are about
  5. Having two highly targeted websites is much more effective than one combo website
  6. Need to change our business model. While RelationshipCoachingInstitute directs traffic to our coaches (it’s main purpose), it does not generate income for RCI. Launching a new business model is more effective when changing the name/brand as people are too familiar with the old one
  7. We have an exciting new Vision for what we can offer singles and couples that needs a new approach from what we have been doing

I would like to share a bit more about #7 above, our new Vision for ConsciousDating.org and PartnersInLife.org.

Each will be “membership” websites that singles and couples can initially join for free, with three levels of membership:

LEVEL ONE: FREE MEMBERSHIP

When first visiting our websites, singles and couples will first see a multi-media intro movie to get an emotional feel for what we are about, along with a short list of what’s in store for them when they enter the site.

Then, they click through and are invited to join as free members to access the valuable content of the site, such as audio programs, e-programs, etc. Most of this content is now available for free at RelationshipCoachingInstitute. The new system will require the visitor to join as a free member to access this content, more effectively generating qualified opt-in prospects.

LEVEL TWO: LOW-COST LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP

Our free members will be encouraged to upgrade their membership at a low, lifetime cost, to access more benefits such as on-line programs, teleclasses, downloadable materials, etc.

LEVEL THREE: RELATIONSHIP UNIVERSITY/HMO

Our lifetime members will be encouraged to upgrade to a monthly membership similar to a “university” or “HMO” for relationship coaching, where they will be able to get individual spot coaching, group coaching, take teleclass programs, access a “hotline” for real-time relationship coaching, etc. This would be more affordable than hiring a coach, but limited enough so it doesn’t replace working with a coach 1:1.

We anticipate that singles and couples will use this level of membership on an as-needed basis (there will be a minimum # of months), then revert back to their Lifetime Membership until needed again.

Two important features of this membership model:

  1. Singles and couples will have affordable access to relationship support
  2. ALL SERVICES WILL BE DELIVERED BY RCI COACHES!

We are very excited about this! In addition to providing our coaches referrals from our web sites, they will now be actively involved in providing relationship coaching for our single and couple members, creating a WIN-WIN-WIN for RCI, the public, and RCI coaches!

TOP FIVE ELEMENTS OF EFFECTIVE MARKETING

When marketing your practice, as well as designing your brochure, website, business card, flier, advertisement, or other marketing effort, I recommend investing the time and effort needed to effectively address the following:

  1. MARKET FOR YOUR DESIRED PROSPECTS, NOT YOURSELF
    What looks good to us is not necessarily effective for our desired audience. Do your market research and test your strategies on your target market.
  2. ALWAYS ANSWER THE FOUR CRITICAL MARKETING QUESTIONS:
    1. WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?
      Is it clear to the reader what is being offered? Any opaqueness, confusion, question marks?
    2. WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
      The big benefit(s) are very clear and directly stated... not implied; the reader doesn't have to guess.
    3. CAN I TRUST YOU?
      How do I know you are safe and credible? Can I find out easily enough if I want to? Is your photo and contact info prominently displayed so I can build a relationship with you?
    4. DO I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THIS?
      Do I WANT to engage you? Do I feel COMPELLED to click my mouse or pick up the phone? Do I feel good about myself in deciding to engage you? What's my motivation? Am I being motivated by fear, shame, or being empowered to make a good choice? Am I so excited that I want to tell all my friends?
  3. ALWAYS INCLUDE THESE THREE KEY ELEMENTS:
    1. POWERFUL HEADLINE
      This grabs their attention and lets the reader know what you can do for them; the big benefit.
    2. COMPELLING CALL TO ACTION
      Your desired result is to motivate your ideal client to act immediately to engage you directly or indirectly and generate a prospect by getting their contact information.
    3. CHOICE OF CONTACT METHODS
      You offer a choice between e-mail, telephone, web site, etc, so your prospect can choose what is most comfortable to them.
  4. CREATE A SYSTEM
    Design a marketing system that you can implement over and over again. Don’t waste your time, effort, and money with one-shot deals or fragmented marketing activities.
  5. FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP, FOLLOW UP
    • Work your marketing system, especially your follow up activities.
    • Always have the next step planned and let your prospects know of future opportunities to engage you.
    • Always contact your leads within 24 hours of receiving them.
    • Always follow up by e-mail, telephone, etc, multiple times (80% of sales are made with 5 or more contacts!).

These elements will make all the difference in the world between struggling to get clients and becoming wildly successfully in marketing your services. They are worth investing your best efforts and getting the support you need to implement them effectively.
