Relationship Coaching Technology:
ONE YEAR AND ONE-HALF INCH (My Personal Story Of Internet Dating)
By David Steele
I had been using an internet matchmaking service for about a year with
disappointing results, meeting very nice, but incompatible women. I was
really getting tired of it, and revised my profile to be more specific
and demanding, hoping to scare off the time-wasters.
After a couple months of zero activity (I scared them off!) I was contacted
by a woman who fit everything I was looking for. She had been having a
similar experience, and only found me when she widened her search criterion
to include someone a few years younger. She NEVER considered being with
someone a year or two younger, and only thought about it after experiencing
a few dead ends and having some time on her hands to search the database
more thoroughly.
We were both amazed at how we both were seeking the same things and not
finding anyone that fit what we were seeking. Turns out that my searches
never found her because she is a HALF-INCH shorter than the minimum I
used in my criterion.
So we had missed each other all this time by the margin of one year and
a half-inch!
In addition, turns out we had met about six months earlier in a singles
setting. I don't recall our meeting, but she does! At this writing Maggie
and I have been together for almost two years, have entered a committed
relationship, bought a house together and blended our families. She is
a wonderful woman and the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am
grateful for her being in my life and for deciding to consider dating
a younger man!
Practice Tips:
TIME ZONE SAVVY
by David Steele
It is common for coaches to miss a teleclass or client appointment by
confusing time zones. Recently, one of my clients missed an appointment
with me due to time zone confusion, and as a coach who deals with time
zones daily, I take responsibility for not making sure our times were
coordinated!
This article is intended to provide you some basic information to navigate
time zones effectively, including:
1. U.S. TIME ZONES
2. TIME ZONES AROUND THE WORLD
3. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
4. TIME ZONE RESOURCES
==========================================
1. U.S. TIME ZONES
The continental U.S. has 4 time zones, each one hour apart. Eastern
time is the most commonly used reference. Eastern time is 3 hours ahead
of Pacific as follows:
Noon Eastern
=11am Central
=10am Mountain
=9am Pacific
------------------------------------------------------------
2. TIME ZONES AROUND THE WORLD
Historically, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich (United Kingdom) was
the time reference for the world, and is still considered the "prime"
meridian from which the times zones originate, referred to as Greenwich
Mean Time (GMT).
Since 1972, the universal reference time for world is Coordinated Universal
Time (UTC) as measured by atomic clocks around the world.
There are 24 time zones in the world. Those east of GMT are later, west
of GMT are earlier.
For example, Noon GMT=
2am in Hawaii
4am in Anchorage, Alaska
5am in San Francisco
6am in Denver
7am in Chicago
8am in New York
1pm in London
2pm in Amsterdam, Stockholm, and Madrid
3pm in Cairo and Israel
4pm in Moscow
8pm in Hong Kong and Singapore
10pm in Sydney, Australia
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is also called "summer time". It
is a method of advancing clocks in a global manner, in order to artificially
expand the daylight hours. Not all countries of the world, or all areas
of the US participate in DST.
DST in the USA:
-begins at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April
-ends at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October
DST in most of the countries of western Europe:
-begins at 1 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday of March and
-ends at 1 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday of October
In the US, DST is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto
Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Eastern Time Zone portion of the State of
Indiana, and by most of Arizona.
When setting a time for a teleclass, client appointment, or conference
call, unless you are sure all parties are local, ALWAYS SPECIFY TIME ZONE!
Here are two resources to help you to be "Time Zone Savvy":
